SHAPE Magazine recommends Tai Chi

Posted by in Tai Chi on Feb 28, 2011

The February 2011 issue of Shape Magazine (www.shapemag.co.za) ran an article posing several health questions and then providing an exercise “prescription” for each.

“I have high blood pressure” – prescription: Taiji twice weekly
Taiji helps to reduce high blood pressure. The American Heart Association conducted a study showing that Taiji lowered blood pressure in adults nearly as much as moderate intensity aerobic exercise such as running.

“I have arthritis” – prescription: Taiji twice weekly
A study done in 2009 by the George Institute for International Health (Australia) found Taiji to reduce musculoskeletal pain. Taiji improves pain and disability among arthritis sufferers. It gently frees up stiff joints.

“I have back pain” – prescription: Taiji twice weekly
Taiji can help reduce back pain. The slow and steady movements of Taiji help strengthen the back muscles making them more flexible and less liable to trauma. Taiji also helps to relax chronically tensed muscles.
