Just Do It! Modern Mantra or Ancient Wisdom

Many people wonder why kung fu masters have their students stand in low horse stance for months before teaching them kung fu. Sometimes it really is just about testing the student to see if they really want to learn kung fu. But sometimes it is more than that. In my “100 Days to Wellness” programme I ask my students to do two things. The first is easy to understand – eat right – but the second is more often than not difficult to grasp. How can standing motionless for minutes on end do anything for my health? I could spend hours explaining the connection between the body, mind and spirit, or the latest research on nutrition, psychology and immunology. More often than not people do not get it. Or I could say Just Do It. “Do what?” you might ask. Stand motionless for minutes on end. The benefits of zhan zhuang (standing post) qigong are profound – a calm and focused mind brings peace and harmony to both mind and body. This harmony brings health and wellness. Believe me? Probably not.

You would be forgiven for thinking that I am a Nike fan but I am actually a huge ASICS fan. My ASICS are the most comfortable running shoes I have owned but I am an ASICS fan for an entirely different reason. I love the name. ASICS is an acronym of the Latin phrase “anima sana in corpore sano“. A sound mind in a sound body. ASICS captures the nuts and bolts of health and wellness. This is what we all aim for and qigong is the way forward. Do not take my word for it. Just Do It and see for yourself.
